Herter, Christian Archibald

Herter, Christian Archibald (1895-1966), became United States secretary of state in April 1959, after illness forced John Foster Dulles to resign. He held that post until January 1961. In 1962, Herter became the president’s special representative for trade negotiations. He served as undersecretary of state from 1957 to 1959 and as Republican governor of Massachusetts from 1953 to 1957. Herter was born in Paris, of American parents. He graduated from Harvard University in 1915. He studied architecture but became a foreign service aide during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.
