Aiken, George David

Aiken, George David (1892-1984), a Vermont Republican, served in the United States Senate from 1941 to 1975. He became a leading member of the Senate Agriculture and Forestry Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Aiken was born in Dummerston, Vermont, on Aug. 20, 1892. He developed a nursery business in the 1910’s and 1920’s, raising fruit trees and wildflowers. He was a member of the Vermont legislature from 1931 to 1935, serving as speaker of the state House of Representatives from 1933 to 1935. He served as Vermont’s lieutenant governor from 1935 to 1937 and as governor from 1937 to 1941. Aiken also was a delegate to the United Nations. He died on Nov. 19, 1984.
