Chalmers, Thomas

Chalmers, Thomas (1780-1847), a Scottish preacher and philanthropist, founded the Free Church of Scotland in 1843. He left the Established Church of Scotland during a dispute over the method of choosing ministers. Chalmers favored their election by the people. He also won fame as a supporter of Sunday schools and as an organizer of relief for the poor. He taught theology at the University of Edinburgh from 1826 to 1843. He was born at East Anstruther, Scotland.
