Couzens, James Joseph

Couzens, << KUHZ uhnz, >> James Joseph (1872-1936), a Michigan Republican, served as mayor of Detroit from 1919 to 1922, and as a United States senator from 1922 to 1936. A philanthropist and public reformer, Couzens set up a fund of about $10 million to encourage better care of children in Michigan and elsewhere throughout the world. He was born in Chatham, Ontario. He helped organize the Ford Motor Company in 1903 and became an executive of the firm.
