Farmer, Fannie Merritt

Farmer, Fannie Merritt (1857-1915), an American cooking expert, was called the Mother of Level Measurements. She emphasized using standard measurements for ingredients, which made her recipes easier to follow and more reliable. Farmer started Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston in 1902, teaching dietetics, kitchen management, and cooking. She provided lecturers for nearly 20 New England hospitals and weekly demonstrations for Boston housewives. Her Boston Cooking School Cook Book (1896) was in its 21st edition at her death. She was born in Boston on March 23, 1857, and died there on Jan. 15, 1915.
