Giauque, << jee OHK, >> William Francis (1895-1982), an American chemist, won the 1949 Nobel Prize in chemistry for pioneer work in the field of very low temperatures. He was the first to obtain a temperature close to -273.15 °C (-459.67 °F), absolute zero. From information gained at these low temperatures, he accurately predicted the existence of two isotopes of oxygen. Giauque was born of American parents in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. He studied and taught at the University of California.
