Hays, Will

Hays, Will (1879-1954), was a Republican politician who became known as the “czar” of the American motion-picture industry. He became national chairman of the Republican Party in 1918, and helped win the presidency for Warren Harding in 1920. Harding named him postmaster general in 1921. At that time, many people criticized motion pictures as immoral. Film producers agreed to obey the rules of a judge. Hays served as judge from 1922 to 1945. William Harrison Hays was born in Sullivan, Indiana.
