Hood, Clifford Firoved (1894-1978), was president of the United States Steel Corporation from 1953 until 1959. He provided leadership for the company’s great expansion during the 1950’s. Hood served as president of the American Steel and Wire Company from 1938 to 1949, and as president of the Carnegie Illinois Steel Company in 1950. Both corporations were subsidiaries of U.S. Steel.
Hood was born on a farm near Monmouth, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1915. He began his career as a sales engineer with the Packard Electric Company. Two years later, Hood became an operating clerk with the American Steel and Wire Company.
