John, Augustus Edwin (1878-1961), a British painter, became known principally for his portraits of prominent people. They include David Lloyd George, George Bernard Shaw, Montagu Norman, William Butler Yeats, Gustav Stresemann, and Dylan Thomas. His portraits are realistic and are considered good interpretations of character. Augustus John was born at Tenby, Dyfed, Wales, and lived most of the time in London.
