Naguib, Muhammad

Naguib << nuh GEEB >> Muhammad (1901-1984), was a leader in the Egyptian revolution of 1952 that forced King Faruk to abdicate. Naguib became prime minister in the new government. But in 1954, Gamal Abdel Nasser replaced Naguib as prime minister and forced him into retirement.

Naguib was born in Khartoum in the Sudan. He entered the army, and attended Fuad University and the Royal Military Academy in Cairo. He fought against Israel in 1948, and later became a major general. During the fighting, he realized how corruption in government had crippled the Egyptian army.
