Nikisch, Arthur

Nikisch, << NEE kihsh, >> Arthur (1855-1922), was a Hungarian conductor, violinist, and pianist. He conducted the Leipzig Opera in Germany from 1879 to 1889, and then led the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1889 to 1893. He conducted the Royal Hungarian Opera and the Philharmonic concerts in Budapest from 1893 to 1895. Nikisch became conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1895, and of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1897. He held both positions until his death. He toured the United States with the London Philharmonic in 1912.

Arthur Augustinus Adalbertus Nikisch was born on Oct. 12, 1855, in Szent Miklos, Hungary. He performed as a pianist when only 8 years old. Nikisch died on Jan. 23, 1922.
