Perkins, Lucy Fitch (1865-1937), an American writer and illustrator, became well known for her series of about 25 “Twins of the World” books for young readers. In the series, Perkins wrote about the lives of children from the United States and about 20 other countries. She intended to create an understanding among American readers of other countries and their contributions to American culture. Perkins illustrated her books with unusual pencil drawings. Perkins began her “Twins” series with The Dutch Twins (1911).
Lucy Fitch was born on July 12, 1865, in Maples, Indiana. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1883 to 1886. In 1891, she married Dwight Perkins, an architect. In addition to her children’s books, Perkins made hand-colored prints and painted murals for public buildings and private homes. She died on March 18, 1937.
