Saavedra Lamas, Carlos

Saavedra Lamas, << `sah` ah VAY thrah LAH mahs, >> Carlos (1878-1959), received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1936. He served Argentina at the Montevideo and Buenos Aires Pan-American conferences in 1933 and 1936, and figured in the settlement of the dispute between Paraguay and Bolivia over the Chaco region. Saavedra Lamas was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and attended the University of Buenos Aires. He was one of the founders of the University of La Plata. From 1932 to 1938, he was minister of foreign affairs. He sponsored the 1933 Argentine Anti-War Pact, and presided over the Assembly of the League of Nations, a forerunner of the United Nations General Assembly, in 1936.
