Staudinger, << SHTOW dihng uhr, >> Hermann (1881-1965), a German chemist, pioneered in organic chemistry. He won the 1953 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his study of “giant molecules.” He developed and proved the idea that the atoms in many complex molecules are hooked together in long chains forming definite patterns. This opened the door to high-polymer chemistry and the development of plastics and synthetic fibers. Staudinger developed many synthetic materials, including artificial pepper and coffee aroma. He was born in Worms, Germany.
