Stone, Melville Elijah (1848-1929), one of the great newspapermen of his day, founded the Chicago Daily News in 1876. He made the Daily News a leader in journalism. Stone served as general manager of the Associated Press (AP) from 1893 to 1921. As the AP general manager, he helped save the treaty negotiations that ended the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. Stone was born in Hudson, Illinois.
