Theorell, Hugo (1903-1982), a Swedish biochemist, made valuable contributions to our knowledge of enzymes and the combustion of alcohol in the body. He received the 1955 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his work on enzymes. Theorell had to abandon his career as a physician when he became paralyzed by polio. From 1933 to 1935, he worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin, Germany, and in 1937 became head of the biochemistry department of the Nobel Institute. Axel Hugo Teodor Theorell was born in Linkoping, Sweden, on July 6, 1903. He died on Aug. 15, 1982.
