Wiley, Harvey Washington (1844-1930), an American chemist, campaigned against dishonest practices in food processing. As chief chemist for the United States Department of Agriculture, he fought for the enactment of a pure food and drugs act. In 1906, Congress passed Wiley’s bill, the first of a series of such laws. Wiley was born in Kent, Jefferson County, Indiana. He became a professor of chemistry at Purdue University after graduating from Hanover College and the Medical College of Indiana.
