Wolseley, << WOOLZ lih >> Garnet Joseph (1833-1913), Viscount Wolseley, was a British soldier. He fought in the second Burmese War, the Crimean War, the Indian Rebellion in 1857, and in China. In 1870 he put down the Red River Rebellion in Canada, and in 1882, the revolt of Arabi Pasha in Egypt (see Red River Rebellion ). Wolseley served as chief of the army from 1895 to 1899. He was born on June 4, 1833, in Ireland, and joined the British Army at the age of 19. Wolseley died on March 26, 1913.
