Berg, Patty

Berg, Patty (1918-2006), an American golfer, became one of the top tournament winners in the history of women’s golf. Berg helped found the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) in 1950 and served as its first president. She was elected to the American Golf Hall of Fame in 1972.

Patricia Jane Berg was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She began playing golf at the age of 13 and won her first tournament at the age of 16. She won 29 tournaments as an amateur before turning professional in 1940. In 1946, she won the first United States Women’s Open ever held. She won 57 tournaments, including a record 15 majors, as a professional. Berg died on Sept. 10, 2006.
