Gunther, John (1901-1970), an American journalist, became famous for a series of books that drew on his observations as a foreign correspondent. His first book, Inside Europe (1936), appeared when most Americans first became aware that Hitler and Mussolini were leading Europe to war. Gunther used the same pattern to write Inside Asia (1939), Inside Latin America (1941), Inside U.S.A. (1947), Inside Africa (1955), Inside Russia Today (1958), and Inside Europe Today (1961). He reported on Eastern Europe in Behind the Curtain (1949). He also wrote Procession (1965), a collection of about 50 biographical sketches on famous persons. Gunther was born in Chicago. He was a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Daily News.
