Haley, Gail E.

Haley, Gail E. (1939-…), a children’s book author and illustrator, won the 1971 Caldecott medal for her pictures for A Story, a Story: An African Tale (1970). She created colorful woodcuts to illustrate this African folk tale and also wrote the text. She wrote and illustrated many other books for children, including The Post Office Cat (1976), The Green Man (1979), Birdsong (1984), Jack and the Bean Tree (1986), Mountain Jack Tales (1992, new edition 2001), Dream Peddler (1993), Two Bad Boys: A Very Old Cherokee Tale (1996), and Kokopelli: Drum in Belly (2003).

Gail Einhart Bell was born on Nov. 4, 1939, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She married Joseph A. Haley in 1959. In addition to her writing and illustrating, she has designed toys and puppets.
