McIntyre, James Francis Aloysius

McIntyre, James Francis Aloysius (1886-1979), was named a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Pius XII in 1953. McIntyre also served as archbishop of Los Angeles from 1948 until he retired in 1970. As archbishop, he worked to make more educational facilities available to the growing numbers of Roman Catholics in the area.

McIntyre was born in New York City on June 25, 1886. He left a promising business career in New York City in 1915 and was ordained a priest six years later. He was appointed an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York in 1940, and coadjutor archbishop in 1946. A coadjutor archbishop is the designated successor of the current archbishop. McIntyre died on July 16, 1979.
