Melchior, Lauritz

Melchior, Lauritz, << MEHL kee awr, LOW rihts >> (1890-1973), was a Danish operatic tenor. He won fame for his performances of roles in the German composer Richard Wagner’s operas. He sang the role of Siegfried more than 100 times.

Lauritz Lebrecht Hommel Melchior was born in Copenhagen on March 20, 1890. He began his career as a boy soprano. He studied at the Royal Opera School in Copenhagen and made his adult debut in 1913 as a baritone in La Traviata. He first appeared as a tenor in 1918. He died on March 18, 1973.
