Motley, John Lothrop

Motley, John Lothrop << MOT lee, jon LOH thruhp >> (1814-1877), an American historian and diplomat, won recognition chiefly for his historical writings on the Netherlands. He wrote The Rise of the Dutch Republic (1856) and History of the United Netherlands (1860-1867). Motley was U.S. minister to Austria from 1861 to 1867, and minister to England from 1869 to 1870. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1910. Motley was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1814, and died in England on May 29, 1877.
