Sloane, Sir Hans

Sloane, Sir Hans (1660-1753), was a British physician and botanist. His private collections and library provided the beginning of the British Museum. Throughout his life, he collected plants. The plants he gathered in Jamaica in 1687 and 1688 were the first brought to England from the West Indies. He succeeded Sir Isaac Newton as president of the Royal Society of London. Sloane became a baronet in 1716. He was born in Ireland.
