Cauchy, << koh SHEE, >> Augustin Louis (1789-1857), a French mathematician, became famous for introducing logical and modern ideas into calculus. He laid the foundations of the present-day theory of functions of a complex variable. He published nearly 800 papers, including important works in algebra, geometry, mechanics, optics, and astronomy. Cauchy was born in Paris. He taught at the Ecole Poly-technique, the College de France, and the Sorbonne. He belonged to the French Academy.
