O’Boyle, Patrick Aloysius

O’Boyle, Patrick Aloysius (1896-1987), was named a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. O’Boyle served as archbishop of Washington, D.C., from 1947 until he retired in 1973. He also served as chancellor of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. O’Boyle won recognition for his work to improve race relations and solve urban problems.

O’Boyle was born on July 18, 1896, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was ordained a priest in New York City in 1921. From 1933 to 1936, O’Boyle was assistant director of the child-care department of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. From 1943 to 1947, he served as executive director of war relief activities of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. O’Boyle died on Aug. 10, 1987.
