Redmond, John Edward (1856-1918), an Irish leader, succeeded Charles Stewart Parnell as the political champion of Irish home rule. When Redmond became chairman of the Irish Nationalist Party in 1900, he healed the split in the party caused by Parnell’s fall from power. Redmond believed in moderation, and was shocked by the bloody 1916 Easter Rebellion in Dublin, the Irish capital. But the Sinn Fein Party, which used violence, gradually displaced Redmond’s party.
Redmond was born on Sept. 1, 1856, in Ballytrent, his family’s residence in Kilrane, County Wexford. He was educated at Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare and Trinity College, Dublin. Redmond died following surgery on March 6, 1918.
