Burton, Virginia Lee (1909-1968), was an American painter, designer, author, and illustrator. She received the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for her picture book The Little House. Among books by other authors that she illustrated is Anne Malcolmson’s The Song of Robin Hood (1947). Her own books include Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (1939), Calico the Wonder Horse (1941), Katy and the Big Snow (1943), and Maybelle the Cable Car (1952). Burton was born in Newton Center, Massachusetts. She studied in California.
