Iredell, James

Iredell, James (1751-1799), served on the first Supreme Court of the United States. He was a member from 1790 to 1799. As attorney general of North Carolina from 1779 to 1782, he was a vigorous supporter of the American Revolution (1775-1783). After the war, he led the fight to have North Carolina ratify the Constitution of the United States. Iredell was born in Lewes, England, on Oct. 5, 1751. He died on Oct. 20, 1799.
