Anza, Juan Bautista de

Anza, Juan Bautista de, << AHN sah, hwahn bow TEES tah day >> (1735-1788?), a Spanish frontiersman from Mexico, discovered an overland route between Sonora and Upper California. He shared in the founding of San Francisco. In 1774, Anza led 34 men from Sonora over the Colorado Desert to San Gabriel. The next year, Anza brought a larger expedition from Sonora and founded San Francisco in 1776. Anza was born at Fronteras, Mexico.
