Carter, Gerald Emmett (1912-2003), was appointed a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1979 by Pope John Paul II. He served as archbishop of Toronto, Canada, from 1978 until his retirement in 1990.
Carter was born in Montreal, Canada, on March 1, 1912. In 1937, after studying at Montreal’s Grand Seminary, he was ordained a priest. In 1939, Carter founded St. Joseph Teachers College in Montreal. He taught at the college until 1961. That year, Carter became auxiliary bishop of London, Ontario. He was bishop of London from 1964 to 1978. Carter died on April 6, 2003.
