Collamer, Jacob

Collamer, Jacob (1791-1865), an American statesman, was postmaster general in the administration of President Zachary Taylor, who held office from March 1849 to July 1850. Collamer also served in the United States House of Representatives from 1843 to 1849 and in the U.S. Senate from 1855 until his death on Nov. 9, 1865.

Collamer, a Republican, was born in Troy, New York, on Jan. 8, 1791. He served in the Vermont legislature. A statue of him represents Vermont in the U.S. Capitol.
