Fowler, Henry Hamill (1908-2000), served as secretary of the treasury of the United States from 1965 to 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. He had been undersecretary of the treasury from 1961 to 1964.
Fowler served as legal counsel to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) from 1934 to 1939. During World War II (1939-1945), he served as counsel to the War Production Board. From 1946 to 1951, Fowler practiced law in Washington, D.C. In 1952, he was named to head the Defense Production Administration. Later that year, he was appointed director of the Office of Defense Mobilization. Fowler was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on Sept. 5, 1908. He received a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College in 1929, and he later earned law degrees from Yale Law School. Fowler died on Jan. 3, 2000.
