George, Walter Franklin

George, Walter Franklin (1878-1957), served as a Democratic United States senator from Georgia from 1922 to 1957. He opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to enlarge the Supreme Court of the United States in 1937. Roosevelt campaigned unsuccessfully to unseat him in 1938. George was an influential supporter of foreign aid programs and international cooperation. He was the first to call for a summit conference of Soviet, United States, British, and French leaders in 1955. Shortly before George died in 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

George was born near Preston, Georgia, on Jan. 29, 1878. He died in Vienna, Georgia, on Aug. 4, 1957.
