Goble, Paul (1933-2017), was an English American author and illustrator of children’s books. He won the 1979 Caldecott Medal for his pictures for The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses (1978). He also wrote the text of this story about an Indigenous (native) American girl who leaves her people to live among horses. Goble wrote and illustrated several other books about Indigenous Americans, including Red Hawk’s Account of Custer’s Last Battle (1969), Brave Eagle’s Account of the Fetterman Fight (1972), and The Friendly Wolf (1975).
Goble was born on Sept. 27, 1933, in Haslemere, near London. In 1977, he became artist-in-residence at the Gallery of Indian and Western Arts at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. He died on Jan. 5, 2017.
