Haywood, William Dudley (1869-1928), was a leader of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), which advocated socialism through industrial unionism. He was an officer of the Western Federation of Miners, the leading union in the IWW. He was acquitted of murdering a former governor of Idaho in a famous trial in 1907. Because of his activities in opposing World War I, Haywood was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment in 1919. He jumped bail and fled to Russia. Haywood was born in Utah.
