Jackson, Henry Martin (1912-1983), served as United States senator from the state of Washington from 1953 to 1983. Jackson, a Democrat, gained national recognition as a liberal on domestic matters and a conservative on foreign affairs.
In the Senate, Jackson supported legislation that favored civil rights, conservation, and organized labor. He also consistently supported high military spending bills. He believed the United States needed powerful armed forces to maintain a strong position in foreign affairs.
Jackson was born in Everett, Washington. He graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1935. In 1940, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He made unsuccessful bids for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972 and 1976.
