Krol, John Joseph (1910-1996), was named a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1967 by Pope Paul VI. He served as archbishop of Philadelphia from 1961 until his retirement in 1988.
Krol was born in Cleveland on Oct. 26, 1910, and educated there. He was ordained a priest in 1937 and served as professor of canon law at St. Mary’s Seminary in Cleveland in 1942 and 1943. From 1942 to 1953, Krol served as vice chancellor and then chancellor of the Diocese of Cleveland. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Cleveland in 1953. Krol died on March 3, 1996.
