Lathrop, Dorothy P.

Lathrop << LAY thruhp >>, Dorothy P. (1891-1980), an American artist and writer for children, won the first Caldecott Medal for Animals of the Bible in 1938. In creating her drawings of animals, Lathrop worked from live models, and her household included many animal pets. Her other books include The Fairy Circus (1931), Little White Goat (1933), Lost Merry-Go-Round (1934), Who Goes There? (1935), The Colt from Moon Mountain (1941), Let Them Live (1951), and Bouncing Betsy (1964).

Lathrop was born on April 16, 1891, in Albany, New York, and studied at Teachers College of Columbia University, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Students League in New York City. She died on Dec. 30, 1980.
