Léger, Paul-Émile

Léger, Paul-Émile << lay ZHAY, pawl ay MEEL >> (1904-1991), became archbishop of Montreal, Canada, in 1950. He was promoted to cardinal in 1953. In 1967, he resigned from his diocese to work with people suffering from leprosy.

Cardinal Léger was born in Valleyfield, Quebec. He served as vicar-general of that diocese from 1940 to 1947. Cardinal Léger was rector of the Canadian College in Rome, Italy, from 1947 to 1950.
