Moorer, Thomas Hinman

Moorer, Thomas Hinman (1912-2004), an admiral in the United States Navy, became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1970. He served in that position until 1974, when he retired from active duty in the Navy. Moorer was chief of naval operations from 1967 until President Richard M. Nixon named him chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Moorer was a Navy pilot during World War II (1939-1945). He became commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in 1962 and commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet in 1964. He served as commander in chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet from 1965 to 1967. At the same time, he was Supreme Allied Commander in the Atlantic for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He was born on Feb. 9, 1912, in Mount Willing, Alabama, and died in Bethesda, Maryland, on Feb. 5, 2004. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.
