Sarazen, Gene

Sarazen, << SAH ruh zehn, >> Gene (1902-1999), an American golfer, became one of the world’s leading players. In 1922, Sarazen won both the United States Open and the United States PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Championship. He won the U.S. PGA Championship again in 1923 and 1933. In 1932, he won both the U.S. Open and the British Open.

In 1935, Sarazen won the Masters Tournament. In the last round, he sank one of the most remarkable shots in golf history—a 235-yard (215-meter) shot that gave him a double eagle on the 15th hole. He tied for first place with Craig Wood, whom he defeated in a play-off the next day. Sarazen played on six American teams in the Ryder Cup competition between American and British professional golfers.

Sarazen was born in Harrison, New York, on Feb. 27, 1902. His real name was Eugene Saraceni. He died on May 13, 1999.
