Spier, Peter

Spier, Peter (1927-2017), was an American illustrator of children’s books. He won the 1978 Caldecott Medal for his pictures for Noah’s Ark (1977). For the text of this book, Spier used his translation of a Dutch poem of the 1600’s that retold the Biblical story.

Spier illustrated more than 100 books. They include the folk song The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night (1961) and the nursery rhyme London Bridge Is Falling Down (1967). Peter Edward Spier was born on April 27, 1927, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He settled in the United States in 1951 and became a U.S. citizen in 1958. Spier died on April 27, 2017.
