Washburn, Sherwood Larned (1911-2000), was an American anthropologist. He became noted for his studies of ape behavior and of human and ape anatomy. Washburn was one of the first scientists to study the behavior of apes in their natural surroundings. He taught at Columbia University and the University of Chicago, and he taught at the University of California at Berkeley from 1959 to 1978. He edited the American Journal of Physical Anthropology from 1955 to 1957. Washburn was born on Nov. 26, 1911, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He died on April 16, 2000.
