Ambedkar, Bhimrao

Ambedkar, Bhimrao, << ahm BED kahr, bim RAH oh >> (1893-1956), became the leader of India’s untouchables and other outcastes. Outcastes were ranked below the lowest of caste Hindus. The first law minister of the new Indian government established in 1947, Ambedkar was chief drafter of the 1950 Indian constitution, which outlawed mistreatment of outcastes. He resigned from the government in 1951, opposing its policies. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Bombay (now Mumbai). His parents were untouchables. Ambedkar died on Dec. 6, 1956.
