Baraga, << BAR uh guh, >> Frederic (1797-1868), a Roman Catholic missionary, became the first bishop of Upper Michigan in 1853. He preached among the Chippewa and Ottawa Indians for over 30 years and established Indian missions in Michigan and Wisconsin. He also wrote a dictionary and a grammar in the Chippewa language. Baraga was born on June 27, 1797, near Dobernig, Austria (now part of Slovenia). He came to the United States in 1830. He died on Jan. 19, 1868. Baraga, Michigan, is named for him.
