Bernadotte, Folke

Bernadotte, << BUR nuh dot, >> Folke (1895-1948), Count of Wisborg, was a Swedish diplomat who became well known for his work in exchanging World War II prisoners. He was active in the Swedish Red Cross for many years and became its president in 1946.

In May 1948, the United Nations appointed him mediator for Palestine in an attempt to bring about peace between the Arabs and Jews. He was shot in the Israeli-held area of Jerusalem, after completing his proposals for a permanent peace in Palestine. Bernadotte was born in Stockholm.
