Del Sarto, Andrea (1486-1531), was an outstanding painter of the Italian Renaissance. He worked in his home city of Florence. During his time, Florence was declining in power, and the greatest artists who had been trained there, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, lived elsewhere. Del Sarto worked in the style that they had developed. It is marked by balanced designs with easy movements, and by gradual shadows and soft colors. Though not original, his work maintained the great Florentine tradition. Andrea Del Sarto is the subject of a famous poem by the British writer Robert Browning.
