Dowie, John Alexander

Dowie, John Alexander (1847-1907), founded the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church in Zion, a religious group that stressed divine healing. Dowie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 25, 1847. He moved to Chicago in 1890. He formed the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church in 1896 in Chicago. In 1901, Dowie founded Zion City, Illinois, as a home for his church. Dowie banned doctors, drugstores, liquor, tobacco, dancing, and card playing from Zion. He was deposed in 1906 for unwise use of funds. Dowie died on March 9, 1907.
